Character Still Lifes

The things we love, and use often honestly describe who we are. We identify with them. They tell stories. The memories we collect are stored in them- our keepsakes.

These are some Character "Still Lifes" from my Illustration-Painting class.

"Coming of Age",  2013
Oil Paint on Panel

This painting describes a young, single, socialite woman from the year 1900. Transitioning from being a child to becoming an elegant woman, she sets off to travel to exotic places. This is what I imagine would be the contents of her heart as she returns home. Her belongings: an exotic scarf, an elephant figurine, a jeweled box, a photo, an empty locket, a rose from a suitor, an open suitcase, a pair of shoes, a letter, a feathered quill, and books.

"Summer's Setting",  2013
Oil Paint on Canvas

This character came from the idea of a young woman living in the countryside with her family. At the end of a quiet, lazy summer day, she lays aside her dress and hat. She is content.

"Parisian Moments",  2013
Oil Paint on Panel

This is more a self-portrait than about another character. Though it has been months since I've returned from my Study Abroad in Europe, I still long to be in the cities I have fallen in love with. One such place was Paris. What an enchanting city. In the painting I depict the Eiffel Tower trinket I bought near the real-life monument, and one of the shells from my first tasting of escargot. The glass beads represent all the Gothic stained glass from the amazing cathedrals we visited (which were some of the most amazing experiences of my life). Paris' name, the City of Love, is signaled by the roses. But most importantly, and perhaps most unrecognizable of the piece is the reflection... before my Study Abroad, I had felt lost, changed, and insecure; it was in Paris that I truly found myself again.

... sometimes a Still Life is just a Still Life, so I've decided to tack these on.

"Aching", Skin of Glass Series

We put up these walls to hide behind, and yet we wear our hearts on our sleeves. If our skin was made of glass, what would be revealed? This series explores how we feel emotion and energy, which are sometimes intangible, and often indescribable. They are felt.
